So i've been thinking about switching out my 2.5L 4 Banger for a Cummins 4BT. ...Dana 60 rears are easier to find than fronts, so if you do the knuckle-out swap using 8 lug hubs and rotors, a rear Dana 60 would be an ideal compliment, as they will both use the 8 lug pattern. A 44 with upgraded internals and 3/4 ton spindles/hubs would be more than needed for 99.5% of half ton rigs with a 4BT.A 4B is a non turbo low powered industrial engine. It can be converted to a 4BT but gets a bit pricy. Either the VW or Mercedes diesels are more mild mannered than the old Cummins but they are different animals. They are higher revving and lower torque engines. m.t.hands. Like.the dodge trans adapters for 727/518 are diesel spec only, the small block bells are smaller by almost 3" in dia. I heavily considered using a JD 4045 (4.5L) when doing a diesel swap. Since I didnt have an engine, getting a 4bt was a cheaper option for me. Another con to them is the weight of them. They can weigh 750-800lbs wet and a 6bt is about 1100lbs, where as an iron block V8 5.3L LS is about 500 lbs.Lower the compression port the head, cam it and all the things that go with , because you will need a lot of RPM to make that hp level. I would build it for TORQUE since that is what it does very well even stock!!!
