Sep 3, 2004 · according to a book i have on chevy small blocks they say the 441 is a very good head, good casting, and was basically the first step away from a high performance head with the increased chamber size (decreased compression). the same book says that if you buy an engine that has 882 heads they should be discarded.Some charts varied in flow considerably for a particular casting. Does anyone have or know of, or even built thier own, Chart with info on several SBC head castings. Castings I'm interested in particular: 882's, 441X's, 441, 186, 993, 487X, 291, and small chamber 305 heads to exclude the Vortec. The 993 and 882 heads are both large open chamber 75-76 cc heads for low compression and have a far and away distant spark plug location, not much for performance.The #882's are a much thinner castings, and i've installed 2.055/1.600 valve combos in them many times, but they do crack , however, i've never yet seen a cracked #487x head. I have a similar set up. Rebuilt 350, flat top pistons, 882 heads, street dominator intake, holley 650 carb, but i went with the comp thumper cams and a rebuilt 700r4 with alto red clutches. The first of the Bowtie heads was not based on the stock casting; it was better than the Turbo casting in a number of ways.andybird. it is common to use up to .480 lift cams with 882 heads, use the Z-28 type valve springs, watch for retainer to guide clearance, most will clear if you use an umbrella or o-ring type seal, do not use the tin shields or valve rotators on the springs.
