That's been kind of my go to for the last 50 years or so after experience with motorcycle cable liners. I have had some success by using one of my motorcycle control cable lubrication fittings. A little block of aluminum with a sealed rubber piece and a hole for putting the plastic nozzle from spray can of lubricant..

The usual method of lubing a speedo cable is to disconnect at the transmission, pull out the inner, wipe it off and smear on some lube. Do not lube the top 6" to 12" of the cable you do not want the lube to work its way into the speedo.
