Oct 18, 2020 · What would be the best powder to use for reloading 45-70? (I only have large rifle primers cci #200/no magnums) I have two types of bullets for it. 525g, Hard Cast, WLN, w/Gas check. and. 350g, Hard Cast, LFN, w/Gas check. They seem to be from "Beartooth bullets" (he had alot of "Acme" cast bullets aswell that i grabbed for my other calibers).

It is a high pressure powder. If you load it to little you cause a high pressure problem, if you load it to much you cause a high pressure problem. Hodgdon does not even list a load with it. Use a stout crimp to encourage complete powder burning. Hodgdon data has pressures listed but that is in CUP measurement and not directly proportional to PSI. Some reloading manuals Hodgdon and possibly Speer list the 3 action types for the 45-70.If you want a more bulky powder to better fill the case try some 5744. It was made for this purpose. 3031 is a great powder for potent 45-70 loads. As a reduced load I think you will be very dissapointed and maybe worse. I have Redding die set and bought the 4th die just to crimp. Case is .060" shorter and bullet tip really pointed. I still can't get the original seating/crimping die to seat bullet deep enough.

This is with my 1885 Browning's.
