A STEM Extension is an extension of Optional Practical Training (OPT) authorization available to F-1 students who graduated with degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM). As of May 10, 2016, the STEM OPT Extension is expanded to 24 months. Previously, the STEM Extension was only for 17 months..
