So I changed the transmission filter on my 2000 C230K. It appears that it had never been changed before (Mercedes claims it is a "closed" lifetime system). There was about 2 quarts of really, really dirty fluid and the filter was plugged. After a thorough cleaning, new filter, new gasket and 7 quarts of Valvoline MaxLife AT fluid, the shifting ....
