So, in case someone else has this issue here's a brief summary of the symptoms and what solved it! 1- Key won't turn in EIS, door chime works so the car knows the key is in there. 2- Remote won't lock/unlock car, red light flashes and remote batteries are new...

When I insert the (only) key into the ignition barrel on the centre console, I can hear the steering column lock/unlock three times, at apparently normal speed and 'force'. If I put turning resistance on the wheel as it cycles, I can 'unlock' it and move it, between the 'lock' and 'unlock' clicks, but the key will not turn in the ignition , at all.The symptoms are: steering lock solenoid works but does not lock the wheel, the alarm does not function in any situation, the alarm #7 fuse was blown and replaced, and the key is dead only in the ignition.
