Model 39 Marlins with HS prefixes will date from 1932-37. Also 1938, but 1938 guns will have HS prefix and 39a style mag tubes. The late 39 also had the serrated buttplate, not the Marlin marked buttplate. Early HS prefix model 39 Marlins will have the bullseye, while later guns will not..

This looks like a great little gun, shoots, feeds, cycles appropriately, etc. When I picked it up from my FFL, he couldn't tell what the first marking in on the serial number. It looks like a C, but doesn't have the bottom edge that you would expect.Jul 8, 2011 · Boot1978; The Micro-Groove barrels did not show up until 1954 in the Model 39-A's. The white line spacer started in 1951. Your gun certainly must have a Ballard style rifled barrel if it does not have 16 lands and grooves that is found in the Micro-Groove barrel. When I have a 1957 39A with the letter "P" (early 1957) in the serial number, plainly struck and not a partial "R" (late 1957). I don't see it on your list but did find it over at the Marlin Firearms Collector Association site. On their list compared to yours between 1957 and 1964 there are several lettered differences as noted.It seems the 39 was produced from 1921 - 1939, the 39-A in 1939, then becoming the 39A in 1954, then Golden 39A in 1983.
